The Trip To Te Anau

Eventually the next day, after hours of cold and adventurous hitchhicking, we made it. “Welcome to Te Anau!” my heart skipped a beat because surprisingly we actually made it in time. We still had one hour to find the house Max and Jake were renting before their shift ended. Just one problem, we didn’t really know what street they lived in. The only thing we knew is that their roommates were working at foursquare (the supermarket). Without knowing what or who we walked in and met the lovely couple! Afterwards wondering down Pompalona street we finally found the house . An old small white bungalow with 4 campervans taking over the little garden. This must be it! No front door to be seen so we had to walk trough the back door. I think we almost cried the minute we stepped into the house. After two days we actually made it, after all the bad luck we had! Meeting the roommates was lovely. Judith, a girl from the Netherlands together with Louis and Elena a couple from France. So at the end the house was filled with 7 people from 5 different countries. They offered us a drink and we waited patiently for the boys to come home. Just the smile on their faces would make us forget the awful journey that we just went through. I say awful, but if I have to be honest… it was an adventure and I would not have wanted it any other way! After a while you just start laughing with the next bad thing that happens. But anyway finally the moment! After a month of separation I could hear my boy walking through the door. His face was beyond words to describe. He hugged me for 10 minutes and the sparks in his eyes made me feel magical. He was so happy to see me and I was so happy with the effort we put in the surprise. God I missed him! We had one of the best evenings ever. Just one problem… 7 people in a house that can only have 5, hmm… Max and I decided to sleep in our car for 2 weeks, until Louis and Elena would move out and restart their journey. Sleeping in the car again was not a big problem, only I forgot to mention that Te Anau is at the bottom of the south island and there is nothing between New Zealand and Antarctica. So yes, it was cold. The 4 blankets kept us warm. The only problem was that sometimes you wake up at 6.30 in the morning because you have to pee. So all you can do is count to 3, open up the door of the car and run into the house. But what if one of your roommates has locked the house after a late shift at work? The only thing left to is pie in your underwear at around -2 degrees in your garden. All moments to laugh about of course! Te Anau is a beautiful small town between stunning mountains and lakes. It's the perfect place to take beautiful pictures and just become one with nature.
